Formulas

Does anyone know if the formulas, such as pH+pOH= 14.00, Ka x Kb= Kw= 10^-14 and so on, will be provided?

Re: Ka

Oh okay, thank you! Also, do you know if we will be given the common bases and acids chart?

Ka

I am having difficulty understanding where we obtain Ka, when all we are given is the pH. Dr. Lavelle did an example during his review and we were able to figure out what Ka was because Kb was given, so we divided that by Kw (10^-14). But, there are problems that don't give you Kb.

I am still a little confused on how we can obtain the hybridization by looking at the Lewis structure; could someone please help me understand it better?

Molecular Shape

When drawing the Lewis structure to determine the shape, do we have to write out the bond angles as well?

Re: Self Test 1 Answers

Yes, your work is correct up to your mol ratio at the end. I do not know where .2 C and .2 O come from. Your ratio should be C: 1 H: 4 O:1 giving you the final answer of CH4O.

Avogadros Number

As I was working on some of the practice problems in the textbook, Avogadro number came out and I am not sure if we will need it for this upcoming test, if so can someone please explain its concept because it confused me.

Re: Quantum Question

I am also confused as to why the change in energy of the electron went from negative to positive.
I was thinking because you can never have negative frequencies or wavelengths, but I am not sure.

Re: Textbook Vs the Exams

No, for the most part Doctor Lavelle will provide the equations we need. However, what you do need to know is how to use and combine them. For instance, the equations: E=hv and c=λv gives E= hc/λ. Side note: v= frequency not volume. If you have bought the course reader for this class look on page 44...

As I was reviewing my notes from Friday's lecture, I came across something I still need further clarification on. My question in, as an electron gets closer to the nucleus does it start to lose energy?

Ohhhh, so the limiting reactant does not mean the number that is the least in amount rather the number that controls how much will be made?

Re: Sig Figs [ENDORSED]

When using the mass of an element to solve for a problem would it be best to use the complete mass given in the periodic table or round? For instance, (N) has a mass of 14.007, would my final answer be thrown off if I were to round and use 14.01?
