you have to calculate the formal charges of all the elements in the compound and the smaller the number is the more stable the structure is.

I think it helps me when I start with the element that's "not common", which means I personally would leave C,H,O to be the last ones to take care of. In other words, I normally start with metal, or just that one or to elements that are not in every single reactant and product.
