Re: Henderson-Hasselbalch Equation

derek1d wrote:Along with this, is there any difference between Ka and pKa? Does the HH equation mean that we will be using pKa?

Ka and pKa are different in that pKa is equal to -log(Ka) and yeah, the HH equation uses pKa. The full equation is on pg. 167 of the course reader if you need it.

Exercise 13.5 (b)

13.5 What is the concentration of hydronium ions in:
(b) a solution that is 0.20 m NH2NH2(aq) and 0.30 m NaCl(aq)?

The solutions manual says that NaCl has no effect, which makes sense. However, how do we know that NH2NH2 is a base and not an acid when writing the equilibrium equation?

Re: Octet Rule [ENDORSED]

Do we have these exceptions to the octet rule only when we are more concerned with formal charge? These exceptions have more to do with the fact that the d orbital is available, so it is used. Recall that the transition metals have a configuration one less than the row they're in, meaning that the ...

Equations for Calculating pH and pOH

There seems to be various equations for calculations with regard to acids and bases. Does anyone have a list compiled or something of that sort? In addition, are we going to be given these equations for calculating pH and pOH during Exam 2?

Lewis vs. Bronsted/Lowry

Given that the Lewis acids and bases follow a more generalized definition and are thus somewhat more applicable, will we focus more on Lewis acids and bases or Bronsted-Lowry ones in this class?

Checking for Formal Charges

When checking to see if the Lewis structure drawn is the best, we check the formal charges for each atom, but this method seems tedious for more complex molecules. Is there a more efficient way to approach drawing Lewis structures when it comes to checking the formal charges?

Re: Tips for completing Lewis Structures

One thing I always make sure to remember is that usually the atom with the lowest electronegativity is the atom that becomes the central atom. I also tried memorizing which atoms had exceptions to the octet rule, such as Sulfur which can exceed an octet and Boron which can have an incomplete Octet,...

I did find pacing really useful, but I was definitely slowed down when it came to interpreting some of the questions. How do you guys typically go about interpreting the questions? Also, how precise do we have to be when (say using the atomic mass of an element) to calculate the answers?
