Re: ICE Chart [ENDORSED]

Will questions generally give you how much of a reactant is left over in the case that it is a weak acid or base? Or do we just have to calculate it using the change x variable and the initial concentration?

Re: Dipole Moments and Polarity

Electronegativity is the average of electron affinity and ionization energy which basically means that if it is hard to take an electron away from an atom and if it wants another electron to fill its shell, it is more electronegative.

Re: Delocalized pi bonds [ENDORSED]

When a shared electron pair is delocalized, it cannot be pinned to one atom in the molecule. It is shared over the whole molecule because of its resonance (blend of structures).

Re: Strength of an Acid

HF is not a strong acid because Fluorine is highly electronegative and also smaller in shape. HF is a weak acid because it does not disassociate as easily in water (the H-F bond is harder to break). As you go down the halogens, the atom sizes become bigger and the bond between the element and H beco...

How come C-Cl bonds are drawn next to each other? How come we can't put the H atoms across from each other and the Cl bonds across from each other to make the molecule nonpolar?

Yes, Sb has 5 valence electrons. Because it is able to have an expanded octet, it will form 3 single bonds and 1 double bond in the structure!

Re: Ionization energy

Because N has a full half-shell and the orbitals are equally filled by one electron, it is more stable. Oxygen is closer to having a full octet and wants another electron more. It would be harder to take an electron from Oxygen's valence shell.

Re: Bond Strength In Same Group

The solutions manual says that electronegativity and polarity arguments would predict the C-F bond to be weaker than the C-Br or C-Cl bond so I think there is another explanation. Does anyone know why?

Re: 2.1

I'm a little bit confused as to how jumping from n=1 to n=2 means that the atomic radius is bigger when the p-orbital is still towards the upper right spectrum of the pt. Does increasing the principal quantum number have more of an effect on the radius than the increasing of valence electrons across...

How does the fact that we know the position of an electron to an accuracy of 1% affect how we solve this problem? I thought we would only use 1% of the radius as our range of uncertainty.

Re: Balancing Process

Also, it's always easier to balance elements other than Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen first and then tackle those three in the order. The other elements usually appear in lower quantities and if you leave C H and O for the end, you may find that they may even be balanced already.
