Just to add on...
Another way to look at it is the sigma bond accounts for the 1 line (single bond) and the number of pi bonds account for the total # of lines minus 1. 1 pi bond = 1 additional line

This is what I understand, someone please correct me if I'm wrong!
All bonds have 1 sigma bond each. So, one single bond has only one sigma bond. Double and triple bonds have extra pi bonds in addition to the 1 sigma bond
