The spin of the electron typically doesn't matter unless you are given a problem with the ms value. And depending on whether or not the ms value is +1/2 or -1/2 will determine the spin of the electron. For instance, if ms=+1/2 then it spins upwards (counterclockwise) and if ms=-1/2 it spins downward...

I remember in my TA Discussion that when working on a math problem you want to keep the numbers as long as possible until you reach the final answer value, and it's that final value where you apply the rules of significant figures so that the answer is the most accurate.
