Re: Solids in cell diagrams

You only use the single line to separate molecules that are in different states/phases (i.e. a solid and an aqueous solution). I'm pretty sure he made a mistake by writing that, and I think he pointed out that mistake during the review session too.

Re: Acidic/ basic conditions

Balancing a basic solution just takes a bit longer and is a bit more complex since there are more steps. First you balance the oxygens by adding H2O, then you balance the hydrogens by adding H+ (this is where you would stop if it were an acidic solution), then you balance the H+ by adding OH-, then ...

Re: n: negative or positive

Yeah, if you're talking about that equation mentioned above, the n itself is not negative, but the negative sign in the equation can make your final answer negative. n is just the number of moles of electrons.

Re: periodic trends

You can also tell an element's reducing and oxidizing power by looking at its cell potential for the redox reaction. The larger the cell potential number, the more oxidizing power the element has. The smaller the cell potential number, the more reducing power it has.

Re: reversible and irreversible expansion

The equation for irreversible expansion is the one that is used more often and is more common. I'm pretty sure you'd only need to use the equation for reversible expansion if the pressure is not constant.

Re: Adding OH

You only add OH- when dealing with basic solutions. So, when balancing a basic solution, you start by adding H2O to balance the oxygens. Then you add H+ to balance the hydrogens. (This is where you would stop if it were an acidic solution.) Then you add OH- to balance the H+ (because you can't have ...

I was wondering, when you open a refrigerator in a closed room, why doesn’t the room become colder? Why does it become warmer? Shouldn’t the cold air leave the refrigerator and cool the surroundings according to the laws of entropy?

Re: q and w

As defined by the textbook, “q is the energy supplied to the system as heat and w is the energy supplied the system as work” (page 278). Basically, q refers to the energy that is transferred or absorbed in a system and work is caused by either an internal or external force that is applied to the sys...

Re: Work

This depends on whether the work is positive or negative. Work done on the system is positive and work done by the system is negative. Here is an example: A gas always exerts force on the walls of its container. It is always trying to continuously expand/push in the outward direction. This is the sy...

Re: Homework Question 8.3

By definition, “q is the energy supplied to the system as heat” (page 278 from the textbook). In this specific question, there is no heat being supplied to the system. There is no heat needed to compress a bicycle pump. There is only energy (w) being supplied through compression. Therefore, q = 0 an...
