Re: Bronsted vs. Lewis
The Lewis acid and base definition is more general that the Bronsted definition, so a Bronsted base/acid is a Lewis base/acid but not all Lewis acids/bases are Bronsted acids/bases (think rectangle and square definition). I usually see Lewis acids as "cations" (sometimes they are actually ...

Re: Drawing
You are welcome to do it if you want, but I don't think that it will be a huge deal if it isn't perfect. As long as you don't do something like making 90 degrees a wildly acute angle, I think you'll be fine. Hope this helps!

Sigma and Pi Bonds
Why is it that you can have two pi bonds and a sigma bond in a triple bond but not two sigma bonds and one pi bonds? Does it only have to do with the way that the bonds form? Like the shape and placement?

Electron Promotion
How exactly do we know which elements can do electron promotion? The book says that elements that have empty orbitals can, like carbon and boron, but can the transition metals also go through electron promotion?

I think there may be a "curve" like a dropped test score? He does say that you need a 50% to pass the class and says that's a C- so maybe he doesn't want us to worry about a curve and just has mercy on us later on? Older years say it's a dropped test score but I'm not really sure. Sorry I ...

Do you know if Ch.5 or another chapter will be on our next test as well, or if it will only be on our final? Since we won't have a test next week, I'm wondering if that would happen?

E=hv vs. Work Function?
Is the best indicator of when to use E=hv vs. E=Ek+work function just whether or not the question asks about a photon or electron? I know sometimes we need to find the energy of photons for the work function equation, but is that for the threshold energy or just the normal energy? I don't think my q...

Re: Electron Spin Quantum Number [ENDORSED]
I'm still confused about how exactly we (or whoever came up with this quantum number) got the numbers -1/2 and +1/2 to describe electron spin. Is there a more conceptual reason behind it? Or did some kind of math just work out like that?

A diagonal relationship means that since the trends for the periodic table are moving up and over in a direction (like how size increases moving to the left and down on the periodic table), elements on the periodic table that are diagonal from each other (usually in periods 2 and 3) have some simila...

Unexpected Result [ENDORSED]
Just wanted to confirm that the unexpected result of the photoelectric experiment was that the intensity of radiation had no effect on the amount of electrons booted off the metal as long as the wavelength wasn't right? I'm still slightly confused.

Re: Question about the Negative Sign in En = -hR/n^2
It's mostly intuitive, so when the electron releases energy you use the negative sign. If you look at the equation: frequency=R(1/n^2-1/n^2) and problem 1.13 you can see that the electron releases energy and you subtract 1/4-1/16 as you know you are going from a place of higher energy to lower. It i...
