Re: Octet vs Formal Charge

Generally, a lower formal charge indicates a more stable molecule, so a structure which gives a lower formal charge would be preferred but if you have molecules with atoms from group 1 and 2, they cant have an expanded octet and need to obey the octet rule, so a formal charge that is not zero is oka...

Re: effects on partial pressure

Increasing the temperature would increase the total pressure of the system and vice versa- since the total pressure is just a sum of all combined partial pressures I would assume that both partial and total pressures increase. Volume varies inversely with pressure and a decrease in volume would mean...

Re: Bronsted vs. Lewis

Bronsted and Lewis are just different definitions for the same thing i.e. either an acid or a base. Bronsted defines it in terms of being either H+ proton donors or acceptors while Lewis defines it in terms of being electron acceptors or donors.

Re: Oxidation Numbers and how to get them

Equate the sum of the charge of each ligand and x to be equal to the charge on the complex ion where x is the oxidation no. of the central metal atom. Solve for x.

Re: Lewis Acid/Base?

A lewis acid can be considered the H+ ion so it accepts an electron pair. A lewis base is OH- so it donates the electrons.

Re: Thio- ?

Thio is used when an oxygen atom in the compound has been replaced by a sulfur atom. N or S is underlined depending on when it is the atom that 'links' to the compound, for eg O in H2O could be underlined to show that it is the one linking.

Re: Polydentate

polydentate ligands are ligands that have multiple bonding sites. Carbonate is monodentate, because it has 120 degrees between its oxygens so both don't bind to the same metal. But sometimes, carbonate bonds to two different metals, making it bidentate.

Re: Radicals and Their Shape

Lone pairs take up more space on the molecule than bonding pair electrons because they face a lot of repulsion from neighbouring lone pairs and bonding pairs so they usually cause the molecule to have a bent/angular shape.

Is it still useful to attend the review sessions if you don't have any questions to ask? Or are they only for discussing problems?

Also, when doing problems is everyone writing it like Professor Lavelle did it in class, i.e. for example px1 py1 (where x and y are subscripts) or just p2?
