Boiling a soup in an open saucepan is an example of an open system because both matter and energy are being exchange with the surroundings. If you put a lid on the saucepan, it becomes a closed system because while the energy is being exchanged, it has a fixed amount of matter.

It is sometimes confusing to determine whether a system is a closed or isolated. How do we differentiate the two? I get that in a closed sytem, a matter cannot enter or leave it, but how do we know that if a system is not necessarily isolated?
