Test 4

I wanted to know who I could go to or email concerning problems with Test 4. I found that there were a couple of problems with my test, and I am not sure who I should tell about these. I talked to my TA, but I don't think that they understood my concern. The problems I had were as follows: For the q...

Monodentate vs Bidentate etc. [ENDORSED]

How do you tell if something is monodentate, bidentate, or some other form of dentate? I asked one of the UA's and they said that we should memorize which ones are bidentate, and other forms cause the others will just be monodenate. However, I cannot find the information on which ligands are which d...

Can someone explain how to do problem 11.49 from the homework? I set up an ice box, but I am not sure that I did it correctly, cause I did not get the correct answer.

Re: K constant

The brackets mean that it is the concentration (mol x L-1) or the Kc for the reaction. The parenthesis with the P means that the K is in partial pressure (either barr or atm).

Re: HW 4.95

So the total structure of CH2CHCHO has 22 electrons, if you put everything in with one bond and a double bond where you are told to, then you get 16 electrons (cause each bond counts as 2 electrons and a double bond has 2 bonds so 4 total electrons). The only element without a full valence at this p...

Re: Significance of Hybridization

Hybridization is important because accommodates for the shape of the molecule after promotion. When promotion occurs and the electrons are moved into higher energy orbitals, the resulting structure usually does not match the shape of the molecule. In order to make the resulting structure match the s...

Re: Dipole Moments

This is the equation that would be used to calculate a dipole moment μ⃗ =∑iqir⃗. If you have a two charge system, like a diatomic molecule then you can use μdiatomic=Q×r. However, we do not have to know these equations. So, if you are asking about calculating dipoles like we do in the homework probl...

Re: Hybridization vs. Standard Electron Configuration

In order for hybridization to occur, you need to be able to have promotion. According to the textbook, "promotion of an electron is possible if the overall change, taking account of all contributions to the energy and especially the greater number of bonds that can thereby be formed, is towards...

Re: Homework 3.39

For this test he is going to give us the formula with the names, so you don't need to know it for now. However, in order to figure this out, you would need to a) know what all the prefixes and suffixes mean for the naming part and b) you would need to know the charges from the periodic table (or jus...

Re: Homework 3.33 C

N is an exception to the ionization energy rule because it has 3 electrons in its p orbital, which is one for each subshell. Therefore, O is more likely to lose an e- because it wants to be like N, since N has a lower ground state energy because it has one electron in each subshell. This exception i...

Re: 3.25

You get the charge for some of them based on the numbers in parentheses next to them (ie Indium(III) is a +3 charge). The other numbers you need to figure out using the periodic table. Group 1 has a +1 charge, Group 2 has a +2 charge, transition metals vary in charge and have to be given to you, Gro...

Problem 2.29 parts, b and c

For parts b and c in problem number 2.29, how would you determine the l value for the orbital? I understand that you would get the n value from the number in front of the orbital s, d, p or f, but once you get that, you get multiple possibilities for l from that number. How do you determine which on...

So even though this is a homework question, we don't have to know how to do problems involving Schrodinger's equation for the upcoming test or for the midterm, correct? Or do we need to know the equation for one or the other/ both?

Re: Black body for quiz 2 [ENDORSED]

According to what Dr. LaVelle said in class, all we need to know for black body radiation is that atoms and molecules usually only absorb or emit unique frequencies that are allowed by their unique electron structure, but black bodies (hypothetically) absorb or emit all frequencies.

Re: All students read this sig fig post [ENDORSED]

Are we suppose to round to sig figs at every step of the problem? In response to a question in my lecture (lecture 3) Dr. Lavelle said to only round to sig figs at the end of the problem.

E.29 part D

Can someone help me figure out how to do part D in problem 29? I tried doing it as a ratio with 16.00 / 206.53 = x / 8.61, but I got an answer that was different from the textbook and I am not sure what else I should try.
