11.7 Part C

I don't understand where the equation (((Mole fraction of Px)Pi)^2)/(Mole Fraction of Px2)pi came from. After reading the section, I couldn't find this either. how did they derive it, or is it just common sense and I'm missing something?

Re: D orbital

I think we're supposed to know all the other information, but in terms of drawing, just know S and P's shapes and how they bond to each other.

Re: Hybridization

If we have an atom like Carbon and we draw out its electron diagram, there would be 2 unpaired electrons, however we know that it can have 4 bonds. Thus, the orbitals are hybridized and it becomes sp3, showing that it can have 4 bonds.

4.77 Bonding and Anti Bonding [ENDORSED]

What are the bonding and anti bonding orbitals for a given molecule? I understand that H2 would only have bonds in the S (circle) orbital, and F would have a P orbital used for bonding, but I'm not sure how those relate to Bonding and Anti bonding.

Re: 4.43

I know this doesn't directly answer your question but 4.43 isn't in Lavelle's homework problem list, so we won't be required to know that information.

q8B on midterm

What would the correct lewis structure and resonance of the HOCO compound be? How do you know to place the electrons and bonds in specific places when the structure is a radical?

Re: drawing sigma/pi bonds

As for drawing (if you mean as in a lewis structure), you would just draw single, double, or triple bonds. To draw the actual bond, as the replier above stated, sigma bonds would be the head to head overlap of the s or p orbitals, whereas pi bonds would be the side to side overlap of p bonds.

Re: Writing out the Hybridization [ENDORSED]

In terms of a common trend, use the amount of bond areas. For example, all atoms with 2 zones of electron density would be SP.

Re: Electron spin in hybridization [ENDORSED]

I think it is arbitrary. When you hybridize the orbitals, Professor Lavelle redrew the electron spin configurations.

Extent of memorization [ENDORSED]

Will we be required to know the bond angles in addition to nomenclature for VSEPR?

Re: Memorization

I'd recommend trying to learn to visualize the shapes that the lewis structures show, as it will make attaching a name to the shapes much easier.

Re: 2.53 [ENDORSED]

It actually has 2 unpaired electrons. 4p2, using Hund's rule means there are 2 electrons with the same spin (and thus unpaired).

I would say that, based on the homework questions, that we won't have to do any calculations, beyond knowing corresponding N, L, and M values.

Yes, it suggests that anything with mass has wavelength properties. As shown in his equation, mass, but further momentum, is related to wavelength, using planck's constant.

Re: Why don't we use the Rydberg equation from the book?

For the purposes of the class will we be learning similar equations for different atoms? I understand the Rydberg equation is based off empirical data for the H-atom, however did Dr. Lavelle mention anything about one for other atoms?

Excess Energy [ENDORSED]

What happens to the excess energy that is supplied to get an electron to a certain energy level? If the jump from n1 to n2 takes 2 joules, but 2.5 is supplied, where will the extra .5 go?
