yes, that is what someone said above.

Re: Calculations

To avoid getting a different answer, you should not round or alter significant figures until you complete the problem that you are doing!

Re: Sig Figs for Final

Although significant figures did not matter on the first test, I'm pretty sure we are expected to be exact with our significant figures, just as we were on the midterm because it is something that we were taught in class.

I am also having some trouble with pi and sigma bonds, but I found these two videos that helped me have a better understanding. I hope they help! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ree49ge4VA4&feature=youtu.be

I believe that the 2 came from balancing the equation; if there weren't a 2 next to OH, it would not be balanced correctly.

Re: Final [ENDORSED]

Should we focus on the new material or the old material more? Which one will be more heavily concentrated on the exam? I would assume that new material would be more heavily concentrated since we were already tested on old material, but as others have said, it may be a mix of questions, as it is cu...

Re: Grading question

When I read this on the syllabus, I interpreted it as: if you get a 50% to less than 70%, it will be treated as if you got a C-. Because of this, I think 250 points does mean that you are guaranteed a C-, but I may have interpreted incorrectly.

Also, your enthusiasm for teaching chemistry made me excited to go to class every time, even though chemistry can be tough sometimes. Thank you so muc...

Re: Wave-like Properties of Electron

I don't think that there is an exact numerical cutoff, but the wavelength can not be extremely small because then it will not be able to be detected. For example, a wavelength of 1 x 10 -34 would be too small. I agree with the previous response that 1 x 10 -18 would be the smallest wavelength that c...

I am confused about this too. In my notes, I wrote that chelate is a complex containing a ligand that forms a ring of atoms with a central metal atom, but I do not really understand what that means.

I think that mono-, bi-, tri-, and hexo- dentates are just the names of the ligands that have a certain amount of electron pairs. For example, mono dentate ligands only have one electron pair to donate. Bi dentate ligands have two electron pairs, tri dentates have three electron pairs, and hexo dent...

Re: When to use lone pairs or bonds

I believe that you'd have to look at the formal charge to decide which to add; if the lewis structure has a lower formal charge with a double bond, then that should be added, and vice versa. I hope that helped!

You're right, hydrogen can only have one electron, but in the s-orbital, you can have a two electrons. If you do electron configurations using the periodic table, you can see that the s-orbital, which is the first two columns, allows for a total of two electrons. I attached a picture to help visuali...

To add on to that, you can use Ar because its outer shell, along with the outer shells of the other noble gases, is full, which makes it easier to have Ar as the reference point. Hopefully that helps!

Re: Information Provided on Exam

I took the test today, and we were not provided with the wavelengths. You should have a general idea of the sizes though--for example, x-rays<UV<visible light<infrared<microwaves. The front of the test only has constants and equations, as it did for the previous test.

Re: Remembering hydrogen spectral series and associated radiation

I am not sure about your first question, but for your second question, I would say that we have to remember what series matches with what radiation. I think Dr. Lavelle said that for tests, he'll give us constants and equations, but not that.
