Re: Significance of Coordination Number?

I think it is important in naming the molecule and knowing its geometric shape. It could also be a question he may ask on the exam.

The bond angle is determined by the molecular shape of the molecule and the amount of lone pairs the molecule has. It is helpful to draw the shapes to visualize the angles better.

Re: electron affinity [ENDORSED]

Electron affinity is the amount of energy released when an electron is gained. Another way of saying this would be how bad the element wants to gain an electron.

Re: formal charge vs. octet

The octet rule must always be obeyed unless the atom has extra electrons which can be used from the d and f subshells. However you use the formal charge to help determine the correct lewis structure because the lower the formal charge the more stable it is.

Re: Lewis Structure vs Resonance Structure

Resonance structures are lewis structures which can have more than one possibility of forming the structure. An example of this would be by using different locations for double bonds for a structure.

Re: octect rule

You can only break the octet rule if the atom has extra electrons available from the d or f subshells. If not the rule cannot be broken and a maximum of 8 electrons must be used for that element. Only break the rule when it allows for a proper lewis structure to be formed.

Re: Stability of Cl vs Cl-

The more stable it is the less reactive it will be because it already has a more desirable amount of electrons. Once Cl gains an electron it has a full octet and does not have a desire to gain any more electrons. Its properties will become similar to that of Argon.

Electrons with parallel spin both spin in the same direction however the will occupy different orbitals because no two electrons in the same atom can have the same 4 quantum numbers.
