Oxidation number

Are we supposed to memorize the oxidation number of every ligand? For example, are we supposed to just know that CN has an oxidation number of -1?

Hybridization purpose

If the way we write an electron configuration for an atom has to be modified to draw the bonds we make, why don't we just use the hybridization electron configuration as the only model? Isn't having two inaccurate?

Formal charge can identify the correct lewis structure when there are multiple options as you said. The one that doesn't break the octet rule (unless it has an expansion octet) and that has a formal charge closest to 0 or exactly 0 is the most stable structure.

So once you make a basic lewis structure you would have to calculate the formal charges of each atoms in the structure and rearrange electrons to get to 0?

As long as you know the three quantum numbers you can figure out which shells, subshells, and orbitals exist.

Like Mr. Lavelle said in class orbital aren't physical spaces that electrons occupy like hotel rooms. They are areas around the nucleus where probability of finding one is high. I'm just not sure how each orbital relate to each other like how s orbitals fit with p d and all the rest.

It helps with how we imagine everything. There's also something called the right-hand rule that shows the positioning of these fields relative to each other.

I think there through previous experiments it was observed that electrons were emitted from various metals when different energy levels of beams pointed at it and so the photoelectric experiment was to identify why/how that happened. Eventually the discrete levels of energy were discovered.

Are we supposed to include question from the Quantum world in Homework 2? We just covered the speed of light and electromagnetic spectrum so there are some questions from chapter 1 that I've never seen. Are these topics that we should know prior to chem 14a?

The value they use in the textbook I believe is 3.00 x 10^8 but the value difference is so small I don't think it should affect your answer that much.
