Re: Half filled exception

This would occur in an atom with an electron configuration where its (n-1)d orbital contains 4 or 9 electrons. The atom will be more stable if it takes an electron from the (n)s^2 orbital making the (n-1)d orbital contain 5 electrons (half-full) or 10 electrons (full orbital) while (n)s orbital will...

Re: Polarity [ENDORSED]

Electron configurations tell us how many electrons there in total and how many there are in each orbital. Therefore, polarity does not play a factor in determining an atom's electron configuration.

Re: Valence shell on Noble gases

The reason on why electrons are added is to achieve a stable state, therefore noble gases do not need electrons to be added as they are in the most stable due to their complete outer shell.

According to Hund's rule, every orbital in a sublevel has to be occupied before placing the rest of the leftover electrons. Therefore the p suborbital can hold 6 electrons in total and has 3 orbitals. Since there are 4 electrons that will occupy the p-suborbital, you will each place one electron in ...

Do we need to memorize the wavelengths and frequencies of different types of electromagnetic radiation (i.e. that 400 nm corresponds with violet visible light etc.) or will we be given a table with the amounts on the test?

HW 1.9 [ENDORSED]

For the last line of problem 9, I converted nm to m and used the formula v=c/lambda to get the frequency. However I keep getting 1.2*10^-1 Hz whereas the solution manual says that it's supposed to be 1.2*10^17 Hz. Can somebody help me figure this out please? Thank you!

There can't be a fraction of an atom and thus you have to multiply the entire reaction by the denominator of the fraction to get all of the stoichiometric coefficients to be whole numbers.

Re: Significant Figures When Multiplying and Dividing [ENDORSED]

They have the same rule: for both cases, you would use the least number of sig figs given in any number in the problem to determine how many are needed for your answer. :)
i.e. 2.8*3.48= 9.7 (used two sig figs as the least number of sig figs is two due to 2.8)
