For further information you might wanna look at the part in the book that explains the photoelectric effect which is essentially used to demonstrate that light exhibits the properties of particles.

Electron Configuration-(Sn)

During lecture of Friday, Dr. Lavelle said that the electron configuration of Tin (Sn) was [Kr]4d^10 5s^2 5p^2 why do we write it in this order? Would [Kr]5s^2 4d^10 5p^2 be considered wrong?

When identifying wavelengths with the Balmer and Lyman series we can always assume that the n1 for the Balmer series will be n1=2 and for the Lyman series it will be n1=1 this identifies the starting energy levels. From the book: "The Balmer series consists of the lines with n1=2 (and n2 = 3,4,...

Re: Energy difference in excited electrons

It really depends on how much information the problem gives you and which values of variables you are asked to find because you need certain components to be able to solve and find certain values. Most often you will only be required to find one component while being given the rest, and in these cas...

Re: Series of light

The Balmer series consists of the lines with n1=2 and is used for the lines in the visible light region of the electromagnetic spectrum while the Lyman series is a set of lines in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum with n1=1.

Re: Wavelength [ENDORSED]

The measure of the wavelength can be from any point on the wave to that exact point one period later however I think we use peak to peak because it can be the most accurate approximation of the wavelength since it is easier to pinpoint the same location a period later when its on the peak.

I believe that the speed of visible light we should know c=3.00 x 10^8 which is one of the things they made us memorize in high school as well but as far as the diameter of an atom I don't think we're expected to memorize. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by the number associated with the human eye?

1.3 Atomic Spectra- Rydberg's equation

Within this section(1.3 Atomic Spectra), we are using Rydberg's equation v= R(1/(n1)^2 - 1/(n2)^2) to find a certain frequency but I'm not sure I understand what wave's frequency it is that we are trying to calculate? And how exactly the components of the formula contribute to finding this frequency?

Re: Wavelength and frequency proportions [ENDORSED]

What Dr. Lavelle was drawing attention to was the relationship in which wavelength and frequency are inversely proportional to one another. This is why when one is equal to 2 the other is equal to 1/2. You can think of it as v=1/lamda (sorry I don't have the symbol) or frequency=1/wavelength.

Re: Difference between wave model and particle model? [ENDORSED]

Well essentially the two models are unrelated yet both can be applied to electromagnetic radiation because the observation of the photoelectric effect strongly supports the particle model which shows that electromagnetic radiation consists of photons that behave like particles while the observation ...
