Re: basics of hybridization

1. Draw the lewis structure of an atom. 2. Count the number of lone pairs. 3. Count the number of bond (a double bond and a triple bond count as 1 bond in this case). 4. Add up #2 and #3 and that gives you a number. 5. The number found in #4 corresponds to hybridization. For example, 2=SP, 3=SP^2, ...

Molecular Shapes to Remember for the Final

Hello, I was wondering if there are specific molecular shapes we are to remember that are more important than others? Or is it important to remember all of them?

Help on HW#4.9 [ENDORSED]

For 4.9 I counted that the total of valence electrons of ICL3 was 28 electrons. When I drew the Lewis structure in order to figure out the molecular shape, I could only fit 26 electrons around all of the atoms when completing all of their octets. Therefore, I am assuming that Iodine has an expanded ...

What if two atoms have the same type of bond? (ie. a double bond). Does this mean that they have the same length and strength?

Re: Test 3 bond length question

Additionally, part of the question was a comparison of two double bonds, each with two lone pairs. In this scenario, how would you discover which of the two bond lengths was longer? * Also, is it correct in thinking the lone pairs stretch out the bond length? I struggled thinking through this quest...

Re: Contributing to Resonance Structures

Whatever structure has the lowest energy state(such as the most favorable formal charge) contributes the most to resonance structure; so if all that separates equally low energy states is the position of a double bond, then showing all the alternate double bond positions would be the correct thing ...

Re: confusion about # of bonds in a Lewis structure

I'm pretty sure the answer relates to formal charge. The correct lewis structure is the one that minimizes formal charge while at the same time maintaining the octet rule for elements that cannot break it. Using your example of oxygen, if we calculate the formal charge for an oxygen with 3 lone pai...

what determines the lowest energy of a Lewis structure? What does it mean when it asks to draw the most stable lewis structure? Does the amount of bonds or lone pairs present in a lewis structure determine the energy or stability?

Re: Radicals

Just to add to this discussion, from my knowledge, if you were to count the number of valence electrons in a compound such as NO, nitrogen has 5 valence electrons and oxygen has 6 valence electrons. In total, the entire compound's total valence electron is 11. Therefore, there must be an electron th...

Re: Energy levels and Orbitals

Hi, I believe what the series describe are Principle quantum numbers(n), or shells as it's usually called. Shells determine the energy levels. Angular momentum quantum number(l) describes the orbital/shape of the subshells (I=0,1,2,3 corresponding to s,p,d,f), and each shell can contain several sub...
