I'm pretty sure you are never supposed to ignore the lone pairs when naming a molecule.

Re: Sig Figs

When in the middle of the problem, you should keep as many decimal places as possible, so that there is no rounding error. I usually keep 3 or 4 more decimals than I will need for my answer, just to be safe.

It's basic because when it dissolves in H2O, One of the H and the O from the water is used to form Ba(OH)2

Re: Hybrid Orbitals and lone pairs

A lone pair takes up one of the hybridized orbitals. For example, h2o is sp3 hybridized with a lone pair in one of its orbitals.

Re: Filling Orbitals for Hybridization

Basically, you count the amount of arrows (electrons) in the outer s and p orbitals and then divy them out to a new sp3 hybridization. So if you have an s with a full orbital (2 arrows) and a p with 2 arrows, it becomes four arrows pointing upwards (not one paired in a box with 2 up and an empty box.)

VSEPR

Does the type of bond (single, double, triple) affect the VSEPR formula? Like is it AX2 if there is a double bond or is it still just AX?

An easy way to figure out all the resonance structures is just be “spinning” the bonded atoms around the center atom until it is back in its original position.

Electronegativity

When electronegativity > 2, then it’s an ionic bond and when electronegativity < 1.5, then it’s a covalent bond. But what happens when electronegativity is between 1.5 and 2?

Re: Formal Charge: Lewis dot structures

Ideally, all your formal charges would be between -1 and 1, and you should change the structure to allow for the maximum amount of FC=0 as possible.

1 x 0.9342769 = 0.9
You are supposed to keep the lowest number of sig figs from your problem, and since "1" has just 1 sig fig, you keep only the 0.9 right?
