You would plug in the n into that equation to find the Einitial an Efinal values. Then you just find delta E by subtracting Einitial from Efinal. The negative sign doesn't always mean the energy will be negative, it just depends on the n values you're working with.

Confusion on exceptions to the octet rule
For the octet expansion exceptions I know it starts with period 3 but does it start with aluminum or does it start with phosphorus? I have conflicting notes from different UA sessions for some reason. Also, if it starts with phosphorus, do aluminum have a different exception? Thank you!

I think it would be more important to make it so the central atom's charge is equal to zero which is generally achieved through manipulating the charges of the other atoms to equal zero anyway.

You know a species is a radical if it has an unpaired electron so essentially going through the steps and figuring out which structures have an uneven number of electrons will allow you to see if it is a radical structure or not.

From what I remember in lecture, it was an experiment where they tried to get an idea if there was enough energy from UV light to remove an electron from the sheet metal. I'm confused about the idea of free energy though.

I think this might be an exception but I'm not 100% sure. I looked it up and found that Silane is interchangeable between SiH4 and H4Si but I couldn't find an exact explanation why it can be written both ways. Interesting question, though.
