Re: Calculating electronegativity
pretty sure we should just be going off of the periodic table trends if they aren't one of the FONCI atoms

Alexander Hari 1L wrote:No, it might be nice to know Kekulé structures, however, for the exams they would want us to write out the entire Lewis Structure
i think the most important thing to know about kekule structures is how to draw resonant structures for molecules that form rings

Re: ranking
you calculate the formal charge of all the atoms, since the most stable structure will see that all atoms have formal charges close to zero

Jordanmarshall wrote:why is h+ and h3o+ used to balance the acidic h ?
Because pH is determined by the amount of H+ ions and H+ and H3O+ all provide those ions

Im assuming its only up to the d orbital, not the f orbital.
we had f orbital examples in discussion, so i assume you will have to know.

Re: does everything have a wavelength
According to DeBroglie: yes everything has a wavelength, but some of them have wavelengths so insubstantial/large that it's difficult to observe wavelike properties from them

Re: Balmer and Lyman Series
Pretty sure all we have to know regarding the Balmer/Lyman series in general (not just for test 2) is that they correspond to the visible light spectrum/ultraviolet spectrum and the numbering for atomic spectra (n=2 vs n=2 )

Re: Work function [ENDORSED]
Work function is the minimum energy required to remove an electron from the surface of a metal which is why you can find the energy of the photon released by subtracting the work function from the kinetic energy of the electron that shot off of the metal

Re: converting from keV to joules
I get confused because the list of equations he provides us tells us nano/centi/kilo but doesn't tell us about the other units we have to memorize but the equation sheet also tells you what one eV is equal to so you can just deduce from there

Re: Chemistry Background [ENDORSED]
It's definitely crucial, because without knowledge of how to balance equations/find molar masses it would be very difficult to grasp other topics in the future. Being able to perform the fundamental calculations will definitely benefit you in future problem-solving, especially when we get to lab por...

Re: Trick to balance?
A trick that has generally worked for me was to find a "unique" element that perhaps is only present in one product and one reactant and to balance that first, and then balance more "common" elements such as oxygen, hydrogen, etc. around that element!

Re: Practice Problem [ENDORSED]
You would need to find molar mass because it's basically asking you how much solid KOH to add to the solution. You should first find the number of moles needed to make the molarity of the solution (M = # moles/volume, therefore #moles= M*volume--remembering to convert mL to L). Then you should multi...
