Most times an acid will start with H and end in the COOH box, but that does not happen every time.

One of the UA's said that we need to be able to come up with an example pertaining to acids and bases but would not need to identify whether a specific example such as tomato juice is an acid or base.

I believe the correct way to write this is sp3d as that is how it is often written in lecture in the solutions manual of the textbook.

Yes we do need to know the exceptions for the exam. I believe that we only need to know the exceptions in relation to the first three rows of the periodic table and not all of it.

The 4S orbital has higher energy than the 3D orbital, which is why you write it afterwards. Also, it is important to note that since the energy in the 4S orbital is higher, the electrons from that orbital will be removed before electrons in the 3D orbital are removed

It is important to note that when the wavelength increases, the electro magnetic radiation's frequency decreases. Since energy of a photon is expressed through the formula E = hv, energy of the photon must decrease since frequency decreased.

Yes we need to know the different energy levels for the balmer (n=2) and lyman (n=1) series. I think that it is also important to know that there are only 7 different energy levels.

The best way to think of a photon is to think of it as light. It is important to note that a photon does not ever have any mass to it.

My TA told me that we do not need to have the different formulas memorized, but need to know which formula is for electrons and which one is for a photon.

As stated above, it is important to always follow the units that the problem gives you. It is also important to note that certain units such as joules are given in (kg(m^2))/s^2 and that the problem will not work if you use grams in it.

It might be easier to begin with the mole ratios in fractions, but the final answer must be given in whole numbers. Using whole numbers is important because when converting atoms needed etc. it is easiest to use whole numbers in the conversions.

I think that using 16 is also fine because it is close enough to the actual value. The TAs have said that they take into consideration rounding when grading the tests and exams.

I talked to my TA about this one and she said that as the quarter progresses, you will begin to identify certain compounds and know their names. She said that there will not be questions on any of the exams or quizzes asking you to name a compound. Hope that helps!

I think that it is always best to leave the most amount of Significant Figures. It is a little bit of an annoyance, but can result in a more accurate answer.
