Is BeO amphoteric?

In the textbook on page 469, it says that usually oxides formed with the metalloid group are usually amphoteric but it also includes beryllium. I wasn't sure if the textbook meant boron instead as I have never learned Be to be a metalloid. Online, it says that Be is classified as a metal but has met...

Re: Dipole induced Dipole interaction

Electrons move around a lot so there could be small moments in time where all the electrons are on one side of the atom and none on the other side making one side partially negative and the other side partially positive. These partial charges can induce another atom to have partial charges as well, ...

You have to take in the electronegativities of the atoms and the structure of the molecule to see which dipole vectors cancel out and which do not.

I don't think the lengths are as clear-cut as that. Double bonds are shorter than single bonds (a triple shorter than double) because it has to do with how the electron orbitals overlap and to what extent

atoms that are in an ionic bond do not share electrons. covalent bonds do share electrons but the partial charges come from when the electrons are not equally shared (due to differing electronegativities)

it's helpful to look at the symmetry of a molecule when determining if it's polar or nonpolar. most symmetrical molecules are nonpolar and the opposite is also true. however differing electronegativities can also have an effect on the polarity of a molecule
