Re: Homework question

Because you want the formal charges to be as close to zero as possible and the structure with the double bonds puts every element with a formal charge of zero. And Xenon will often have more than 8 valence electrons around it so it works out.

Re: Ionic bonds and polarizing power

Ionic bonds have covalent characteristics because almost every ionic bond has a bonding region or distorted cloud, where the anions electron is pulled into the bonding region.

Re: Clarification of Pi Bonds and Rotation

Pi bonds are formed by the overlapping of two 'spare' p orbitals. This forms a flat bond above and below the sigma bond, this pi bond is only stable in one orientation and if there is any bond rotation then this bond breaks. Pi bonds prevents rotation because of the electron overlap both above and b...

Re: electron density

After you draw the lewis structure you can count the number of regions with high electron density which are the bonding pairs and unshared electron pairs around the central atom. Double and triple bonds count as one region of electron density.

Re: Sigma & Pi bonds

Pi bonds are usually weaker than sigma bonds since pi bonds happen when two atomic orbitals are in contact through two areas of overlap , like how in the lecture he showed how they are more spread out than sigma bonds.

Yes all the bond angles would be less than 90,120,180 because the lone pair is more repulsive and the bond angles are pushed further away.

If you are referring to the lines Mr. Lavelle drew in lecture between the elements that were bounded together such as (C----C), the line just represents the covalent bond between the elements, 2e- per line.

To the best of my knowledge I don't believe you could calculate the number of photons emitted in a light source with that equation but you could calculate the energy each photon holds.
