Re: Homework Question 7th Edition 2F.15
S character is the proportion of the number of hybrid orbitals that the s block contributed. For example in sp3 hybridization, there are 4 orbitals and only 1 is from the s block so there is 25% s character.

A molecule is linear if there are 3 unshared pairs around the central atom because the 3 lone pairs occupy a horizontal plane and the two bonding atoms occupy a vertical plane.

Re: CH2Cl2
The shape of ch2cl2 is tetrahedral so the chlorine atoms are 109.5 degrees away from each other, not opposite from each other. This causes dipole moments towards the chlorine atoms which do not cancel.

Polarizability is the ease of the distortion of the electron cloud of the atom or molecule.
Polarizing ability is how easily an atom or molecule can distort the electron cloud of another atom or molecule.
Polarizing ability is how easily an atom or molecule can distort the electron cloud of another atom or molecule.

Electrons can move to higher energy levels when they are "excited" by absorbing extra energy. When electrons move down from their excited state to a ground state, they release this extra energy in the form of a photon.
