Re: Bent Structures

I believe it is appropriate to saw all bent structures are polar due to their shape. There will always be a net electronegativity pointing in one direction since they cannot cancel each other due to the bond angle.

Re: VSEPR Notation

Recognizing the VSEPR formula is very helpful for naming the shapes of each molecule so I would recommend learning these. I'm sure this will pop up on the final so you should probably get used to giving the AXE(formula), bond angles, and shape for each molecule given.

Re: Difference between hybridization and hybrid orbitals

hybrid orbitals are orbitals created by the combination of atomic orbitals in the same atom. Hybridization happens when atomic orbitals mix to form a new atomic orbital.

I know with writing classes, if you don’t fufill the prerequisites, Myucla doesn’t even allow you to enroll in the course. I’m not sure how it is for math and chem but maybe you could talk to lavelle and see if that would be acceptable. If you have AP credit for math that might also get you out of m...

Re: Linear Shape of O2

Because the oxygen molecule has 2 oxygen molecules that are stuck together so they are non polar. They can’t have a dipole moment because they have the same electronegativity.

Chlorine is electronegative and H gives it an electron, making it slightly more positive and thus chlorine is more negative, creating a dipole moment

Hi, I was wondering if chapter 1F will be included on the test on Tuesday because in class, Dr. Lavelle mentioned the test would only include information taught up to Friday's lecture, but the outline on his website shows that we should also know 1F. One of the TA also said we have to memorize the ...
