Re: Formal charges
I wouldn’t necessarily write them out unless he asks for it on an exam. If you are doing it to check though, you can always do a short cut way, the equation would be number of valence electrons - sticks & dots. So the number of electrons of one element, minus the sticks and dots drawn around it....

Not curved, but if you get 250/500 points, you pass with a C-

Re: Lewis Structure
Calculate number of valence electrons. The element with the smallest amount will always be center. Add them all up to draw the dots.

Re: The center atom
Typically, to draw the Lewis structure, you would need the total number of valence electrons, so what I do is write out each element’s valence electrons and the element with the smallest valence electron number is the center. Not sure how accurate my interpretation is, but that’s what I do for it.

Another tip, Lewis bases are almost always negatively charged. They can also be neutral charged.

You just draw all of the possibilities of each bond. Example, let’s say there’s two H’s and one O. One H & O have a double bond. For the second resonance structure, you would just draw the double bond on the other H instead of the first one.

Re: Photoelectric Effect
The photoelectric effect is a measurement of how much kinetic energy (or electrons) is released when a photon hits a metal surface. It calculates threshold and if the frequency of the photon is large enough(meaning it is larger than the threshold) to release electrons.

If the particle has mass, it canNOT be faster than the speed of light. I believe lavelle said that in lecture.

I would recommend you do B and then BL. The 14A series is sort of meant to be a 2-year (6 quarter) series.

Re: units
One really easy way I learned to convert nanometers back to meters is to just take the sig figs and move the decimals to multiply by 10^-7. For example, 340 nanometers would be 3.40 x 10^-7m.

You cannot add "O" because you would essentially be inputting a different element that isn't actually produced in the chemical reaction. How I like to look at is that adding an extra "+ ___" is never okay.

I'm writing down the entire equation for self-reference when it's time to study it again. Would highly recommend it!
