Re: Biological Importance

Biological Importance of Coordination Compounds TM(Transition Metals) have many oxidation states: Good for e- Transfer TM Often Bound to a cage-like Molecule (Poly dentate Ligands) E.g. Porphyrin Ligand: Tetradentate Square Planar 4N (Nitrogens) Fe Bound to Porphyrin Ligand ---> Heme Complex That's...

Re: How to tell if it is an acid or base?

Acids and bases are generally visible whether something has H or OH ions within the compound. NH 3 just has to be known that Ammonia is a weak base. There are some several compounds that just have to be known what they are so we can use them quickly and commonly. To also find out if a compound is ac...

Re: Acid dissociation

I'm not entirely sure of your question? Are you asking if it's possible experimentally and in reality for 100% dissociation? Probably not based on what Dr. Lavelle said. It's near impossible for 100% efficiency for regular dissociation. That's why we round up that strong acids and bases act like the...

Re: Polar

Can someone explain how we identify if a bond is polar or non-polar? To identify if a bond is polar or non polar depends on the structure of the molecule. If the Dipoles all cancel each other out when all the directions are considered for the structure then the molecule is non-polar. Polarity usual...

Re: Resonance structures

On a test would be asked to draw the resonance or hybrid structure? This is related to each other. The Resonance would just be all the possible ways to draw the hybrid structure, if the Lewis Dot Structure was a hybrid structure. To draw the hybrid structure would be absolutely crucial to determini...

Re: Shape

Electron pairs DO affect the structure of a compound by creating electron repulsion between them which has a specific angle. 3 Pairs and 1 bond results in different shapes And this is how they define these shapes, by the way the lone electrons and the bonds interact between each other. Recall the VE...

Re: Expanded Valence Shells

Yes, it's possible for other atoms with energy level 3 and higher to have the expanded valence shells, but it's very unlikely because they are more stable with full octets/ it is "easier" for them to fill up with valence electrons or lose them to form a shared octet with a different atom. ...

7th 1B.15 When do you use E = hv or Ek = 1/2m v^2?

I am trying to follow the steps of the similar practice problem in the textbook of Example 1.B3 but I have no idea how they somehow get electron volts for their (b) section. I understand how to use the Ek function, but I do not know exactly why or when. I'm just trying to trace the steps of the exam...

Re: electron volts conversion

According to the textbook in the Appendix section, page A4. The electron volt, eV, is the SI equivalent of 1.602 177 x 10^-19 J. The derivation for this particular result is probably from some experiment with the photoelectric effect? As for whether we have to remember this value or not, I am unsure...
