VSEPR Shape vs Molecular Geometry
On the exam, how would we know whether to give the VSEPR name aka (linear, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, trigonal bipyramidal or octahedral) or the molecular geometry aka (bent, trigonal pyramidal, seesaw, T-shape). What specific words indicate which name they want.

Ionic vs Covalent
During lecture we were told that if the electronegativity difference was greater than 2 then it was and ionic bond but if it was less than 1.5, it was a covalent bond. However, in my discussion we were told that if it was <0.4 it was covalent, between 0.4 and 1.8 was polar covalent, and greater than...

Re: Polarizability and Polarizing Power
Polarizability is how easy it is to move/pull the cloud, therefore the bigger it is, the easier it is to distort it. Polarizing power is how good an atom is at pulling on bonding electrons, so the smaller it is the more polarizing power it has. You can also see which one is more positively charged a...

Re: cyano vs cyanido
Cyanido is the "newer term" of cyano, so basically they are the same thing, you will see both but they mean the same thing. Similar to how you can use either chloro or chlorido, you just pick one and stick to it so don't use them both at the same time.

How do we determine a molecule's polarity by looking at it's VSEPR formula? I know we can draw it out but is there an easier way?

Does anyone know when our last day if instruction is ? I tried looking on the syllabus but couldn't find it. Do we end instruction at the end of next week? I know week 11 is finals week so I was wondering if we're still going to be learning up to dec 9 (our final) ?

Re: Polarizability vs Polar Power
Polarizability is how easy it is to pull its e- and polarizing power is how good an atom is at pulling on bonding electrons. For polarizing power, you would look at which has a smaller nucleus, which has a greater positive charge and which is more electronegative. For polarizability, you would look ...

Re: Steps to figure out hybridization
In most cases you do have to draw the lewis structure to figure out hybridization but in my discussion, my TA told us that some elements you can figure it out just by looking at the element you are given, for example C2H4, you know that there will be a total of 3 bonds and when there are 3 bond pair...

Re: Lone Pairs
When you have a lone pair, it causes repulsion and it makes the bonded pairs want to get closer together which decreases the degree of the angle, also Lavelle has said he doesn't expect us to know the exact degree of the angle, as long as we know its less than the original shape, for example trigona...

Re: Model formation
I don't think so since you have different amounts of lone pairs and bonded pairs around the central atom, this changes the Lewis structure since the way you would format it would have to abide by how much repulsion and stabilization the model has.

Re: Determining Shape
Yes, because the more sets of lone pairs you have, the more the shape changes since lone pairs cause a bigger amount of repulsion which ends up affecting the degree of the angle as well.
