dantate and angle

why do 2 lone pairs on one coordinate compound have to be seperated more than 90degrees to form 2 different dantates?
ex: CO3^2- is ususally monodantate

dantate of double/single bonded oxygen

CO3^2-
there're two single bonded oxygen and one double bonded oxygen.
Is it true that only single bonded oxygen (3 lone pairs) can be counted as one dantate? and why? because the double bonded oxygen also have 2 lone pairs right?

oxidation state calculation

[NiCl4]2-
[Ag(NH3)2]+
[PtCl2(en)2]2+
[Cr(edta)]-

why are the oxidation states of TMs 4;2;6;6?
I understand that en & edta are polydante, but how does it affect the oxidation state of TM

Re: Polydentates

Normally Carbonate is monodentate, because it only has 120 degrees between its Oxygens, so two oxygens cannot bind to the same metal. However, in some cases carbonate bonds to two different metals, making it bidentate.

Re: Oxidation states "()" in naming coord compounds

It will always be positive. During exam, it's useful to calculate the oxidation state by including all the atoms in the molecule, just to make sure it's the right oxidation state :)

Re: Transition Metals

It's useful to know both reverse and in order mechanism. Which example of the lecture are you referring to?

Re: Seesaw

The bond angles for see saw would be slightly less than 90 and slightly less than 120. The reason is that the lone pair on the equatorial axis will repel the atoms on both the axial axis and equatorial axis.

Re: lewis acids & bases

It's always helpful to draw the Lewis dot structure, and then determine which one is lewis acid/base. Also, a quick way is to memorize the common lewis acids and bases. Such as acids: NH4+, H3O+, Fe3+ / bases: NH3, H2O, CH3-

Re: Strength and Length of Bonds

the state of matter always depends on the intermolecular forces. Just think about how the speed of the movement of the particles/ molecules make their state different, and you will realize it's talking about the bonds between molecules instead of the bonds between atoms. Br2 is liquid under room tem...

Re: Intra vs Intermolecular forces

you can also think about it in this way: intramolecular forces include the overlapping of orbitals and the actual share/giving of e-. It will be much stronger than just "interactions" of molecules - the intermolecular forces

Re: vsper structures

axial is like when 2 lones pairs are furthest from each other (in 180degreee) For example in the square planar structure, the two lone pairs are above and below the "sqare planar" formed by 4 bonding atoms. equatorial means it's in the same plane as some other bonding atoms. For example in...

Re: Confusion about Atomic Spectroscopy [ENDORSED]

Spectroscopy is the analysis of light emitted or absorbed by substances
E.G.
Light emitted by an excited sample-->it passes through a prism in order to seperate colors --> the seperation of colors (lines/images) are recorded

The pictures of explanation online will be super helpful :))

Fahrenheit, Celsius, Kelvin

Hi, I'm curious why we have different unit system for temperature. I understand that Celsius is related to H2O and Kelvin measures absolute zero. Why don't we replace Fahrenheit with other units? Or unify all of them into one? Thanks so much for anyone who would like to answer this :)) It's not a ve...

How to understand the questions correctly

Hi, I'm doing the questions on the book and get a little confused by some FAQ. So I want to ask is my statement below is true: -When the question ask "amount": it's asking the moles -When the question ask "number": it's asking number of objects (N) -When the question ask "we...
