Re: FINAL PRACTICE - Lyndon's Churro Review Session [ENDORSED]
oh you still do subtract, you should have 1.04961466x10^-2 mol H+ and 5.24x10^-3 mol OH-, u subtract so you are left with 5.2497 x10^-3mol H+. Then you divide by 1L to get molarity (same number) then -log[H+], you should get a pH of 2.28

Re: FINAL PRACTICE - Lyndon's Churro Review Session [ENDORSED]
for number 34 you have to find the limiting reagent of the acid and base essentially. CaO dissociates to Ca2+ and O2-, and think of O2- + H2O -> 2OH- . So 1 mol CaO is equal to 2 mol OH-, maybe that's your error?

Re: Final Exam
yea boiling points are a characteristic of IMFs, stronger bonds mean a higher boiling point because they want to stick together more, so it's less likely to go from liquid to gas

yea I don't think this is necessary, most of the time you are drawing lewis structures which are 2d, then stating the 3d shape and molecular geometry

The final is probably accumulative, but it would be best to study problems on the newer information like acids and bases and coordination compounds. The rest is review from the past lectures

Re: Octet Rule
I would say formal charges are more important at period 3 and on, as they can use the d-block for electrons. Also, group 13 are exceptions you have to look out for, as well as hydrogen, helium, lithium, and beryllium as they can't get to 8 and are fine with 2 for a full shell. The octet rule is stil...

Re: Finding the lowest energy structure
You have to test it because some lewis structures are more stable than others and the formal charge shows this stability in number terms. There are also resonance structures, but they are all the same in terms of formal charge and stability.

Re: Formal Charge and the Octet Rule
The octet rule can be broken for the 3 sub shells as they have s,p, and d. That means their lewis structures can have more than 4 bonds or more than 8 electrons, and Lavelle showed some examples during lecture.

It would be the first one, and it goes f, d,s,p. You don't need to know that though because you only need to know up to the first d-block.

Re: Momentum and Wavelike Properties
Everything has wavelike properties, it is just if it is too big then it is too small to be detected. Lavelle did this by using the de Broglie equation with a car, but the wavelength was too small to detect. It is noticeable in particles because they are small, so the wavelength properties are more a...

KE= 1/2 mv^2, it is only velocity squared, not m. energy would not equal 1/2 pc, as p=mv. It isn't (mv)^2.

I am pretty sure the formulas and constants are on a formula sheet in the front like the first test, so you should focus on being able to solve the questions. However, you should also be comfortable with all the numbers and understand all the equations and what the constants are.

I am pretty sure it is miniscule enough to count as 100%, so the calculation shouldn't change much. However, if it doesn't add up you should look at the reaction and see what could be lost, like oxygen in oxygen gas.

7th Edition L.35 question
I have a question on L.35 because the question and the answer in the solutions manual seem to be different. I tried balancing the equation FeBr2 + Na2CO3 -> NaBr + CO2 + Fe3O4, but it seemed difficult so I checked the solutions manual. However, the answer key has it balanced as Fe3Br8 + 4 Na2CO3 -> ...
