Lecture 1 Example

In Monday's lecture we did an example with a nitrate ion. Dr. Lavelle wrote how many valence electrons there were in Nitrogen and Oxygen and then he wrote -1 charge. Why did he write the -1 charge? Is that the value we have to calculate with the formal charge equation?

In a previous posting from some time ago students said to answer parts b and c by multiplying the energy received in part a by the amount of atoms you get from the given masses. Why is this allowed? How do we know that multiplying the number of atoms by the energy will give the correct new energy?

In Monday's notes we wrote that the description if light as photons explains the intensity profile of black body radiation but have yet to talk about it again. Are we supposed to know the concept/definition of black body radiation? Is there any importance or significance to black body radiation?

Not sure if I am posting in the right section, but what are the standard units for frequency and wavelength given by the equations. The chart has a wavelength in nanometers and Dr. Lavelle did an example on Wednesday also with nanometers but I thought meters was standard.

When to double moles

When do you know to double moles or multiply an answer to get the next whole number. In the lecture we had to multiply 1.33 by 3 but if a number is like 1.1 or 1.9 do we still have to or can we round it? Are there any general rules?

In the class example involving solid calcium carbide to form ethyne gas Mr. Lavelle wrote that 1.56 moles of calcium carbide requires 3.12 moles of water. What does this mean? Is it just about getting to the closest whole number? Does it have any affect on solving the problem?
