polydentate

I just wanted to make sure that i did get this right:

Basically to find out if a compound is polydentate and how many bonds it makes with the central atome (transition metal) we are suppose to count the number of lone pair on this compound and it will give us the # of bound created?

re: Bond Length and Resonance

Which are the ligands name that we are requiered to know for the final? Are they the one listed in the manual (7th => p724) or will we be given a chart with these common ligands name?

alphabetical order/ charge

When we name the ligand part of the compound, should we start by naming the anion in alphabetical order and then name the neutral compound in alphabetical order or should we name all of the ligands in alphabetical order without consider their charge?

Lone pair

Should we consider lone pair as sigma or pi bond when we do hybridization?
For example if an central atom is linked with 3 atoms (sigma bond) and 1lone pair is it s1p3 or s1p2 hybridization?

Thank you very much!

Sigma and pi bond

Hi,

I was wondering how we were suppose to work with resonnance structure to determine sigma and pi bond?
Do we count 2pi bond, 2 sigma bond or one of each?

Thank you very much!

When you have a molecule such as CH4, is it considered as polar or apolar?
Does the 4H atoms dipole moment around the C atom cancel themselves?

Hi,
I don't understand why single and multiple bond are considered the same as they have different electon "concentration", why aren't double bond more repulsive than single bond?

For all of my other classes, the discussions/labs have been canceled because half of the class would miss the discussion hours at the end of the week. I still think that you should email your TA to know about this since for chem the dis...

Electron configuration when 4s and 3d

Hi,

I'm still really confused about how we should represent atoms that have either 3d or 4s shell.
Should we fill the 4s first and then then 3d? (4s^2, 3d^10) Or should we fill 3d before 4s? (3d^10,4s^2).

Thank you very much!

Hi,

I was wondering if we were supposed to represent the lewis structure differently when there is a resonance.
Are we supposed to reprend each possibility, show the electron movement with arrow or draw half/ third bond (depending on the molecule)

Re: Do I have to memorize the spectrum?

During my discussion, the TA said that we should have the information required to find the n level. If you have done the A15 exercise in the book though, they says that the wavelenght studied is from the UV spectrum and this should be enought for you to state that it's from the lyman serie with n = 1

Hi,

I asked this question to my TA on friday before TEST1 and she said that it's fine to write with a pencil as long as you can clearly read the answer.
It might depend on the person who correct the paper so i think that you should ask this question before taking the test.

I hope this will help!:)

Re: post assessment

This is a dilution problem, typicaly you have to use the following equality: C1.V1 = C2.V2 Here you have: C1 = 0.0380 = 3.80 x 10^-2 V1 = Unknown C2 = 1.50 x 10^-3 V2 = 250mL = 0.25 x 10^-3L You have 1 value that is unknown so you just transform the equality so that you end up with V1 = (C2.V2)/C1 a...

In this problem, you want to figure out the ratio (the empirical formula) between quantity (in mole) of Oxygen (O) and tin (Sn) in the oxide of tin. The step for this kind of problem are the following: - calculate the mass of each component: m (Sn) = 1.50g m (O) = 28.35g - (26.45 + 1.50 = 27.95 => m...
