Re: Hybrid Orbitals

I had another question when it comes to hybridization and counting how many bonds we have do lone pairs affect it? In the homework for that section, I remember there was one example where only 3 bonds were created but the answer was sp3 instead of sp2. That's why I'm guessing that something in the l...

Re: tetrahedral or square planar?

One thing that we could also use to differentiate between them is that type of metals we are dealing with. For tetrahedral, it consists of all four complexes being non-transitional metals. Square planar in the other hand deals with 2nd and 3rd-row transitional metals.

Regarding the hybrid orbitals, I was wondering what determines if it is written as sp3 or sp2. What are we supposed to look at when deciding what number to use, I'm a bit confused.

I'm also not sure but I was looking at my notes and perhaps it is only the atoms that have both s and p shells full. We need to also consider that the number of hybrids orbitals are simply the regions od electron density.

Re: Strength of covalent bonds

I think we have to look at this problem in terms of what type of bonds and how it overlaps. sigma is not overlapping as much as pi bonds so it is stronger in that sense. sorry if this is confusing. Try searching an image online, if you see it might make more sense.

I heard that we need to also feel very confident with the Lewis structures for the sections on molecular structure because an error in the structure can make you get everything else wrong.

Re: sigma and pi bonds

I think it is the other way around. Pi bonds are weaker than the sigma bonds. Pi bonds are easier to break. I think it has to do with the sigma bonds been closer to the nucleus or something like that.

Is this like when you need to complete an octet and you form a bond with another nearby atom? If so, in such case would the one seeking to complete the octet be the one that accepts (Lewis acid) and the one that attaches to it (through a bond) the Lewis base??? OR does this have nothing to do with c...

Re: pi-bonds

You could think of it as the second bond that is made. The sigma is the first bond (electrons are taken from the center, C--O ). The pi is formed by taking electrons from around the atom to create bonds. I'm not sure if it makes sense unless you see it, at least that's how they showed me.

Re: Pi bonds and sigma bonds

The Sigma bond is when two electron clouds meet and create a bond (think of it as the FIRST bond that's made). And the Pi bond is the second bond made. This bond is made from electrons that are around/surrounding the bonded atoms. I don't know if it makes sense because you kind of need to see it but...

Also, you should take into account that it is 4d^8 and that is always full so it will do anything to get full, hence reach stability. And yeah also because the 4d orbital needs to get filled before the 5s

For the 4s orbital n+ l = 4 + 0 = 4. For the 3d n+l = 3 + 2 = 5. So 4s is lower in energy so fills first. After calcium the 3d orbital falls below the 4s in terms of energy. This means the 4s electrons are lost first in chemical reactions and define the atomic radius of the atom. In summary, repulsi...

Normally in class, they always start filling the boxes with an up spin and if all the boxes get up spins and you still have extras then the second round is when you would use the down spin. I think you should just stick to this because even the book does it this way.
