I'm not really sure, but I know that it is losing an electron (considering the "+") which means that it is taken out of the s orbital.

This equation is balanced on both sides... Each nitrogen has 2, while each hydrogen has 6 ( 2x3=6). Thus, this equation is not based on equivalence, but rather making sure that each element has the correct coefficients on both sides to get that stable balance.

I know that E represents the energy of the photon, while the equation itself represents electron removal... In lecture today Professor Lavelle showed us an example of the electron removal from a metal. My question is can electrons be removed anywhere?

If the oxidation number is greater in the product, then it lost electrons (oxidized). If the oxidation number is less, then it gained electrons (reduced).
