Typically the lone pairs are good indicators because it can show you if it is able to donate or accept electrons.

It is dependent on the ionization energy, however there are some exceptions. The book lists those.

It's easier to think of the states in relation to how densely packed the atoms are. Solids have atoms that are densely packed and have strong attractions. Thus, they will have stronger bonds.

I think it depends on your TA. Some will check for accuracy and others will simply grade for completion.
