For those problems I just memorized that each orbital(s,p,d,f) has a specific shape that corresponds with a different quantum number (l). I usually write out this chart: # of orbitals : 1 3 5 7 (quantum #l) : 0 1 2 3 orbital shape : s p d f So from this you can see that with 5d, l=2, and the number ...
