Re: Problem 12.15 6th Edition

You're only using 16 valence electrons if both oxygens have a double bond and you want to be using 18.

7.29 6th edition Cobalt vs Colbaltate

So for this question it was asking for the names of different coordination compounds, several of which had cobalt as the metal to which the ligands are bound. The compounds were b) [Co(NH3)6] 3+, c)[Co(CN)5(OH2)]2-, and d) [Co(SO4)(NH3)5]+. For b and d, cobalt was just called cobalt in the full name...

A lewis acid is an electron accepter while a base is an electron donor.

HW 6th edition 4.25a

So the question is asking for the lewis structure of CH2Cl2 and whether it is polar or nonpolar. I'm confused because if you draw the lewis structure with the Cl's across from each other, then the molecule is nonpolar whereas when you draw the lewis structure with the Cl's next to each other the str...

Exciting Chemistry News!

I wanted to share a news article I found that was chemistry related and that I found very interesting! It's about a recent change to how a kilogram is defined.

Re: Do I need to memorize the Light Spectrum? [ENDORSED]

I don't think you need to memorize exact values. Just having a general idea and being able to approximate the wavelengths for each major type (UV, infrared, etc...) is sufficient.

Re: Mass percent composition [ENDORSED]

Yes, mass percentage composition is simply the percentage of the mass of a certain element in a compound. So you take the mass of the element divided by the molar mass of the entire compound and times 100%
