Re: Sulfur Trioxide Hybridization

I would draw out the lewis structure in order to figure out the shape. The shape coordinates with the hybridization orbitals. steric #2= linear=sp steric #3= trigonal planar=sp2 steric #4= tetrahedral=sp3 steric #5= trigonal bipyramidal=sp3d steric #6= octahedral=sp3d2 They also coordinate with the ...

Re: Lewis structure of I3-

I believe the reason why is because when you put the formal charge on the central atom, the outer Is have a formal charge of 0 which makes entire ion more stable. When drawing lewis structures, I usually start by counting all of the valence electrons including the -1 charge. So for I, the valence el...

If you count the amount of atoms and lone pairs surrounding the central atoms you will get the steric number.

Re: Energy Levels

When the electron changes levels, it decreases energy and the atom emits photons. The photon is emitted with the electron moving from a higher energy level to a lower energy level. The energy of the photon is the exact energy that is lost by the electron moving to its lower energy level.

Usually you will be given the value for the actual yield because we are not in a lab course and then the value that you are calculating by using stoichometry is the theoretical yield.
