Re: FINAL PRACTICE - Lyndon's Churro Review Session [ENDORSED]

Thanks in advance!

BaO a Lewis acid ?

Question 12.17 on the hw states BaO is a Lewis acid. How do we come to that conclusion? Is it because in the lewis structure O has 2 lone pairs of e- ? If so, then is it safe to say that even when we have a neutral molecule, if it has lone pairs we consider it a base that donates e-?

homework question 12.11

The solutions manual doesn't specify, so I was wondering if when they list the acids and bases, they're listing the conjugate acid-base pairs as
"ACID conjugate base, BASE conjugate acid?"

Calc pH

I’m a bit confused as to if we need to know how to calculate the pH of a weak acid solution. I thought Professor Lavelle said we didn’t, but on the practice probs, box 12.1 is listed and that gives steps on how to find the pH of weak acid solution. Also, exactly what calculations from chapter 12 mus...

Earlier today someone some one told me that the coordination number was the number of DIFFERENT bonds which threw me off. But what I'm seeing here is that when we have 3 of the SAME atoms bound to a central atom, the coordination # is still 3, right?

Re: Molecular shape in relation to polarity and boiling point

I believe that if the molecule is polar then it has a higher boiling point than something that is non-polar. But when comparing 2 polar molecules' boiling points it is important to recognize what forces are present (hydrogen bonding, LFD, Dipole-dipole) and the one with more forces present has a hig...

Re: 6th edition 4.13

I have a question on part d for this problem. I drew the Lewis structure and placed two lone pairs on the O so that all atoms would have a formal charge of 0. As a result I thought the molecular shape would be bent do the repelling of the lone pairs; however, the solution manual says it’s linear. Wh...

Formal charge on atom w/ expanded valence shell

If we have for example XeF4 (ch. 3.65 6th ed), the formal charge on Xe is zero; however, when we’re looking at the bond pairs and lone pairs there’s 12 electrons around the Xe. Will the charge for atoms w expanded valence shells always be 0?

Re: Shape and Boiling Point

What is the relationship between shape and boiling point? Like I know if it's rod-shaped there's a stronger interaction because of the larger distance, but what does that have to do with its higher boiling point? the way I think of it is that when 2 rod shape molecules interact the shape allows the...
