Re: FINAL PRACTICE - Lyndon's Churro Review Session [ENDORSED]

Wait so regarding #21/the Porphyrin question does that mean Fe is not covalently bonded to the Ns. Why I'm still confused is that it looks like there are 2 Ns with 3 covalent bonds and one pair and 2 Ns with a double bond, single bond and a lone pair so in that case the overall formal charge of the ...

If don't know if this is what you're asking, but when you draw more bonds, the bonds are shorter and the bonds are stronger

Yeah I think you would just look at the bonds so N2 which has a triple bond has one sigma bond and 2 pi bonds.

Re: Electronegativity vs. Electron Affinity?

Electronegativity is more conceptual because it refers to how well an element attracts an electron, but electron affinity is an actual value of the energy released when an electron is added.

I think people are confused because N has a higher ionization energy than O, but O is still more electronegative than N.

Rank C,N,O,F on Ionization Energy

Yesterday in the peer review we ranked C,N,O and F on ionization energies and I remember the ranking was an exception to the usual rule of ionization energies increasing across the period. Can someone explain this?

Re: Bond order

I actually think bond order is just based on the number of bonds between two atoms so F2 which has a single bond has a bond order of 1, O2 which has a double bond has a bond order of 2 and N2 which has a triple bond has a bond order of 3.

Re: px,py,pz???

Yeah, I don't think the x, y, z has to be specified specifically. BTW, they simply refer to the different axis that the p-orbitals are on, so one is on the x-axis. another is on a y-axis and the last one is on a z-axis.

Shielding [ENDORSED]

Because the 2S and 2P orbitals both have the quantum # n=2, I thought that these orbitals were the same distance from the nucleus, but I believe Prof. Lavelle mentioned today that the 2P orbital experiences shielding from the 2S orbital. Is this true/does the 2P orbital experience shielding from the...

Re: Post-Module Assessment typo?? - Balancing Chemical Reactions

Prof. Lavelle mentioned that balancing rxns is just like solving math equations so if you left your answer as is it would be like saying 2x=2 when you really should simplify to x=1 if that makes sense.

Re: Avogadro's Constant Definition

@804994652 Answering your question, those questions should be asking "how many molecules of Cl2" because Cl2 is a molecule not a singular atom. But, maybe if they were asking about how many atoms are in Cl2, you would answer 2 in that case.

Yeah, I doubt you would need to know it on a case specific basis. But, it may be good to be able to describe some reasons off the top of your head so Reactant sticking to the container, instrumental errors, side rxns, etc.
