Re: Biological importance on final?

Yes, just the basics that were covered in lecture about hemoglobin and the transition metals that he mentioned in class (Cr, Co, etc;)

Re: 6th edition 4.5

From what you posted, I think that it's just asking for the name. We don't need to know exact bond angles that are less than the norm, so just saying less than 120 degrees is fine for HW.

Re: Test 3 material

Lavelle posted this on the "Announcements" portion of his website Test 3 covers: End of Bonding from 3.12 (6 Ed.) and from 2D (7 Ed.); and all of Molecular Shape and Structure (see Syllabus and Outlines for details). And the respective outlines can be found further down his webpage. Stuff ...

Re: Homework 2F.1 Question

Hi, I think the difference lies in what you are describing. For this question, these are hybridized orbitals (which take the wave nature of electrons into account, as we cannot tell precise electron locations) and thus it would make sense to describe them in regards to their orientation "toward...

HW Question 2E21 Part D

In this question, it asks for the bond angle of N2H4. The answer key says that it would be 107 degrees. I understand that it is a trigonal pyramidal and that it is supposed to be less than 109.5, but how was this exact value obtained?

HW Question 2E.19B

This question asks for the shapes & bond angle of (CH3)2Be. I'm a little confused about what to consider when talking about electron density. I know the answer key says tetrahedral, so that means 4 regions of electron density. Why aren't the bonds in the other (CH3) considered?

Silver halides & solubility

I have in my notes that "increasing covalent character of silver halides makes them less soluble as the size of anion increases." Why is this so and how is it related to polarizability?

Drawing shape based off of lewis structure

For question 2E.3 part b, the book incorporates the shape of the molecule into the lewis structure by drawing the wedges. And I understand that we are not expected to draw the 3D model, but are we supposed to know how to draw the wedges? And if so, how do we know which atoms are positioned in the fr...

Electron Distortion definition

I'm a little confused on the definition for electron distortion. I know it occurs when electrons are less tightly help and is proportional to the polarizability of electrons, but I'm not so sure of its exact definition.

Re: Covalent Bonds [ENDORSED]

It might also be helpful to think of nonpolar covalent bonds occurring with diatomic molecules (ex: H-H) as the electronegativity would equal 0, while polar covalent bonds occur with two different nonmetal elements

I don't think anyone knows for sure, but I think a good rule of thumb is to be really familiar with the basics of each topic and in turn, you can apply what you've learned to whatever questions may come up on the test

Re: Units within calculations

Hi, I think we are supposed to put units for every step of our answer since it makes it clear to your TA and as well to yourself what units you are working with and how they cancel out to give you the units in your final answer.

Measurable wavelike properties?

In lecture, we went over a couple of examples of applying De Broglie's equation. When we get the wavelength of an object, what do we use to compare the measurement to in order to say if it does or does not have measurable wavelike properties? I've heard that it was 10^-18, but I'm not sure why.

I was wondering if anyone knew of other video lectures to help me better understand this topic, I personally just find it helpful to hear the concepts presented in different ways.

How do we know that BrF3 is the excess reactant in this problem? I thought ClO2 was the excess reactant due to 12 moles of it vs. 5 moles of BrF3?
