Re: Can We Take The Final In Pencil?
The final has to be in pen, at least that is what will be graded. I'm pretty sure you can use pencil to work out some problems though but you have to remember to trace it in pen in order to get credit.

if the ligands are on opposite sides, then it is considered trans. if the ligands are on the same side, then it is considered cis.

Re: 9C.1 7th edition
The solutions manual says that the general equation for determining the oxidation number of metal in a complex ion is:
(the # metal atoms)(oxidation number of the metal)+(# each ligand)(charge of each ligand)=charge of the ion
(the # metal atoms)(oxidation number of the metal)+(# each ligand)(charge of each ligand)=charge of the ion

Re: Lewis vs Bronsted
I'm not sure about bases but I think B-L acids mean a substance must contain/donate H+ to be an acid while Lewis acids mean all the substances that can accept an electron pair form a lewis base are known as acids.

Yes. The electronegativity trend is that it increases as it goes up and to the right on a periodic table.

Re: Question about what makes something ionic
The electronegativity difference between H and Br atoms is not that large and the atoms in the molecules are not dependent on associated charges to stabilize one another.

Re: Lone Pairs
This may be the wrong wording but I think because the lone pairs are more.. free? That's what makes them more negative, therefore having a strong repulsion which is why they have to be separated as far away from each other. Where they are then placed will affect the bonds near them which will cause ...

Since resonance structures show a molecule's overall stability, I think it is most relevant when determining where the molecule might be more electron rich or poor, eventually leading into figuring out its molecular shape.

Salts are able to dissolve in water so you know it has ionic bonds. I'm not necessarily sure about molecules alone, but I think it may safe to assume that it is a molecule if it does NOT dissolve in water, and of course has covalent bonds.

Re: Trends in the periodic table
The trends of electron affinity in the periodic table are that electron affinity increases as it goes up the groups and across the periods from left to right. This happens because electrons added to energy levels get closer to the nucleus so there is a stronger attraction between the nucleus and its...

From my understanding, "degenerate" refers to "same energy" or "of equal energy" so if it is talking about degenerate orbitals, it means that they have the same energy.

I am pretty sure you can use a lowercase l. I do that as well because it can be quite confusing. I'm not exactly sure how to explain what ml is but from what I understand, it just tells you the subshell's (which is determined by l) orbitals orientation. So in the example he gave us, if the subshell ...

when you guys say sig figs aren't affected by constants, does that mean we will still get the right answer if we use them or to not use it? In other words we should just ignore the constants and go based off the variables given to us?

From my understanding, threshold energy is the minimum amount of energy that is needed for a reaction to take place, so in this case the "reaction" is removing electrons.

My TA said to not round the atomic masses given on the periodic table, just use them as is. One of the few times that it's safe to round, is when you are trying to find the empirical formula for a compound because that's when you really want the whole numbers.
