The detector used in the photoelectric effect is slightly charged towards the positive, so even if the energy from the photons meets the threshold energy/work function the detector can pick up on electron emissions (or at least, that's what I interpreted from his explanation).

Yeah, these two units of measure are equivalent because anything attached to a negative exponent is meant to be written as a fraction for example 10^-1 = 1/10. Thus, the -1 part of g.mol-1 means that this unit can also be written as grams over moles.
