Why is trichloroacetic acid stronger than acetic acid?

I see that the larger the pKa the weaker the acid but I still don't understand the explanation for the structures and why 3Cl makes the acid more stable

A simple explanation would be that being closer to the central atom causes lone-pairs take up more of the available 'bonding space'.
