Re: 6th edition problem J.15

In each of the following salts, either the cation or the anion is a weak acid or a weak base. Write the chemical equation for the proton transfer reaction of this cation or anion with water: (a) NaC6H5O; (b) KClO; (c) C5H5NHCl; (d) NH4Br. Why are we supposed to ignore the Cl in C5H5NHCl but not in ...

Re: H2So3

Bronsted acids are actually characterized as donating protons, not accepting them, so in the case of H2SO4, the molecule would become deprotonated and lose one of its H atoms to become HSO4^(1-). This is a case in which an anion can act as an acid because HSO4^(1-) can donate another H+ to become S...

H2So3

Why is H2SO3 considered a bronstead acid? I know bronstead acids are defined by their tendency to accept protons/Hydrogen ions, but how do we see that in H2SO4? Also same question for Ca(OH)2, how do we tell it's a bronstead base?

Re: polarizing power and polarizability

Anions with a bigger atomic radius have a higher polarizability because electrons on the outer shell of big anions don't have a very strong pull towards the nucleus and are therefore easily taken Cations with a smaller atomic radius have higher polarizing power because the nucleus pull is very stron...

If i'm not mistaken, sigma bonds can be the overlap (or hybridization) of various bonds. For example s&s or s&p or even s&d. But pi bonds are the the overlapping of p&p exclusively

Re: Bond Angles

For this, is there a way to calculate or memorize bond angles when there is a lone pair? It is usually slightly different than the angles of the normal structure. Is there a set degree amount that a lone pair shifts a bond? There's no set amount of change I believe. I just know that the more lone p...

Re: Drawing structures

I'm pretty sure when we're using the wedges and dashed lines (vsepr structures) , we're only interested in showing electron density and the resulting shape and direction. So single bonds/double bonds/triple bonds are all treated as single bonds.

We won't need to use the equation in a calculation, but make sure you understand it's concept and purpose because anything is fair game for the midterm.
