Balancing Redox Reactions

Is there a simple method used to balance redox reactions occurring in a basic solution? By that I mean is there a way of balancing redox reactions in a basic solution by reducing the amount of thought we have to put into such questions?

Re: Adding H+ and H2O

Also, remember that you add H+ and H2O when the redox reaction occurs in a acidic solution. If it takes place is a basic solution, you use OH- and H2O to balance the redox reaction.

Cell diagrams and solids

In a cell diagram, when do you include a solid and why do we have to include a solid? Also, Is the solid always going to be Pt(s)?

If delta G is less than zero, this means a reaction is always product-favored
If delta G is greater than zero, this means a reaction is always reactant-favored

Re: Kp equilibrium constant

I don't believe you necessarily need to always convert the pressure to atm because when you solve for Kp, you can use bars as well for the units.

Helium walks into a bar,
The bar tender says "We don't serve noble gasses in here."
Helium doesn't react.

Re: Acids and Bases (weak or strong)

You can determine whether an acid/base is strong or weak by solving for Ka and Kb. If Ka/Kb is larger than 10^-3, consider it to be strong. If it is less than 10^-3 consider it weak.

Re: Water

Water can either be a liquid, solid, or gas. Any substance that has been dissolved in water is said to be in an aqueous state (remember that aqua means water). For water to be in an aqueous state is in itself, a contradiction.

Transition from 20 Series to 14 Series

Hi everyone, I recently switched my chemistry series from the 20 series to the 14 series. I took CHEM 20A with Baugh in the fall quarter and decided to take CHEM 14B with Lavelle. What are some main concepts from CHEM 14A that I should know that would help me in CHEM 14B? Anything would help!
