Re: Effect of size [ENDORSED]

I think because Van der Waals forces depend on size. he bigger the size, the greater the force due to the electron clouds.

I believe for Single bond it is a sigma bond .
Double bond is a sigma bond plus on pi bond.
A triple bond is a sigma bond plus two pi bonds .

Re: Ground State

Actually the configuration for Cu is [Ar}3d^9 4s^2 but because 3d^9 is so close to have a complete shell it steals an electron from 4s^2 taking away one electron and reducing it to [Ar]3d^10 4s^1. Lastly because Cu^+ has the plus sign it means you're removing an electron versus in the hypothetical ...

Oh okay, because when I counted it and went through the process I got 9 not 10 for the D orbital

The configuration for Sn would be [Kr]4d^(10)5s^(2)5p^(2). HOWEVER, since it loses four electrons, it becomes Sn+4. The four lost would be those on the outer shells being 5s^(2)5p^(2). Hance the anser is [Kr]4d^(10).

Re: Number of orbitals given quantum numbers

I believe it is 4 orbitals since s-shell can have 1 and p-shell can have 3.

The d-shell has 5 and f shell has 7. But since we are only going to n=2 it would be 4.

Ground State

The ground state for Copper ion Cu+ was being asked for. I thought it would be [Ar]3d^(9)4s^(1)

However, the correct answer is [Ar]3d^(10).

Can someone explain the reasoning behind this?

To show the conservation of mass. Also my TA said not to assume every chemical equation we get on the exam will be balanced. He said to verify everytime we are presented with an equation to check ourselves that it is balanced.
