Personally my favorite parts of the course are when you'd show the fun videos or play music before the weekend your jokes are actually fun...

Re: Minimize formal charge of whole molecule?

The goal is to get the atoms in their most stable state, thus the goal is to get the formal charges of the atoms as close to 0 as possible.

Re: strength of bonds

I'm not quite sure if there is a value that we use to determine bond strength I think just remembering that as the number of bonds increase, so does its strength so the strongest bonds are triple bonds>double bonds>single bond with single bonds being the weakest.

Re: Cation

An easy way to remember the difference between a cation and a anion is how anion has an "n" in it I relate that to its negative charge and then the cation is positive from that inference. This happens from anions gaining elections making them more negative, and cations losing electrons mak...

Re: Summary of Periodic Trends

Thank you for this helpful summary of periodic trends, what I would add to that table is which elements (metals, nonmetals) differ with their affinity and how their ionization energy differs as well.

Re: Reading the textbook

I find it most helpful when I Read the textbook because it has detailed explanations of how to carry out out the problems along with examples, steps, and answers. Yes, it is overwhelming at time but what I try to do is learn or read one section per day so I dont stress about having to read and learn...

I would ask your ta I dont think it should matter if they don't specifically ask for the answer to be in scientific notation.

It might not make that big of a difference and my ta has stressed again and again that as long as your answer is close enough to the actual answer it shouldn't be counted as wrong.

What I do is to do the assigned hw problems ahead of time, that way when he is going over how to do them in class I already know what is going on and take notes on things I might have had trouble doing in the homework.

The pessimist sees the glass half empty.
The chemist sees the glass completely full, half in the liquid state, and half in the vapor state.
