Hess's law allows us to calculate the total enthalpy change in a reaction regardless of what steps had to be taken to get to a certain chemical equation.

Hello, an example in the book explains that a molecule is nonpolar because "the symmetry allows all three dipoles to cancel" but I'm not seeing how this symmetry concept applies to other molecules. Can anyone provide another way to tell if a molecule is nonpolar?

In 2E.3B in the book it asks for the shape and electron arrangement for ClO2-. I understand that the shape is angular but how is the electron arrangement tetrahedral when there are only 3 elements in this molecule.

My counselor recommended that I take Chem 14B and 14BL afterwards so that I won't be confused with the content from the lab. Basically, 14B will prepare you for the lab.

Ionic bonds are stronger than covalent bonds because in covalent bonds, the electrons are shared so it has a lower electronegativity. Highly charged ions will have stronger bonds than ions with small charges.

Yes my TA recommended that we show important work so that if we make a mistake along the way, he'd be able to see if the wrong answer came from us simply not knowing the correct steps or if we just made a mistake but were headd in the right direction.

The most favorable lewis structures will be the ones with the least formal charge or formal charges that add up to zero. I'm not sure if we would be asked to draw all of them but you can draw a resonance hybrid to show the different arrangements of electrons.

All three of those atoms essentially copy the orientation of Argon as they have gained electrons in order to satisfy the octet rule. However, since they have gained electrons but keep the same number of protons, the positive charge is spread out more over the atom with each additional negative char...

In bonds like SF5-, why would it be better to have the remaining two electrons on S rather than creating a double bond between one of the Fluorines? Either way, you aren't really getting the formal charge so I'm a little confused.
